The First Marriage of Julia R. (Pond) (Flanders) Balcomb
Posted by: Richard Turner (ID *****0573) Date: December 17, 2012 at 18:33:24
  of 1124

According to A Genealogical Record of Samuel Pond and His Descendants [1875], p.54, Julia R. Pond, daughter of Myron and Lois (Peck) Pond, was born, possibly at Shoreham VT, on Nov 27, 1827. She married a man named Balcomb and moved to Galesburgh IL, where she died in 1861.

However, this was not her first marriage. The evidence that follows hopes to show that she was married previously, and had a child as a result of that marriage.

Julia R. Pond and Samuel Flanders, both of Au Sable Forks NY, were married "on the walled banks of the Ausable" by Rev. Nichols of Keeseville, Aug 7th, 1845 [NYGBR, 118:206].

The 1850 Federal Census shows that Samuel Flanders, age 27, Julia Flanders, age 23, and Harriet Flanders, age 3, were listed as residents of Jay NY. Also listed as residents of Jay in the same census was Myron and Lois Pond. The 1850 census also listed George Balcomb, age 30, and Lucy Balcomb, age 28, as residents of Cornwall VT.

Sometime during the next ten years, both Samuel Flanders and Lucy Balcomb probably died. The 1860 Federal Census for Galesburgh IL lists George Balcomb, age 42, and Julia Balcomb, age 31, as residents. There were four children listed, ranging in age from 6-12 years of age. Among these children was a Harriet Balcomb, age 12, born in NY. The other three children were born in VT between 1850 and 1854. It is not known whether Harriet was legally adopted, or the census taker went on the presumption that Harriet's last name was Balcomb.

The two census records are consistant in regard to the places of birth and the ages of Julia and Harriet. Harriet cannot be the daughter of George Balcomb by his first wife, as there was no listing of a Harriet, age 3, in that household in 1850. Furthermore, Harriet's marriage record to Charles A. Moulton, filed in Stafford CT on Sep 25, 1869, lists her maiden name as Flanders. Her death record, filed in Whiting VT on Aug 1, 1880, gives her birthplace as NY and her age as 33y-0m-2d. This is also consistant with the information provided in the two census records for Harriet.

Based on the marriage record cited in the NYGBR and the supporting census data, it would appear that Julia Pond was married first to Samuel Flanders and secondly to George Balcomb, and that "Harriet Balcomb" was really "Harriet Flanders", daughter of Julia (Pond) Flanders by her first husband.
