Generation No. 1
Joyce, My ggGrandfather Reuben1 Poppleweile came into Isle of Wight, as a 5-7 year indentured servant some time in the 1780's: He had red hair & fair complexion..as you see below He died in 1822 & his wife married Stephen Baker later? and they moved to clanton, al in 1828, as you see below.
My Grandfather No. 10. Madison Popwell told me that when he entered the port that they spelled his name wrong & to be legal He had to keep it until his Indenture was over & citizenship established...Then his children used the correct name "POPWELL"
Joyce, I have searched most of the Parish's
in Yorkshire, Eng. where we think He came from & haven't found anything. We have a friend here in Americus, Ga. from Yorkshire, & when She returns in Aug. She is going to check some more for Us.
The same for Margeret Charlotte...She was born in Va.? but no record's..The courthouse in Darlington, Sc. burned in 1810.

  This is the 1st. & some of the 2nd. generation

About the POPWELL/POPPELL/POPPLEWELL/POPPERWELL/POPLE/POPEWELL & other's..The only one's that I have found that goes back to the 1500's are "POPWELL'S"..one that I remember was Agnes POPWELL-christen in 1547(Does It tell You something??)

2. REUBEN2 POPWELL (REUBEN1 POPPLEWEILE) was born 1811 in Darlington, South Carolina, and died November 22, 1873 in Chilton County, Alabama. He married SARAH MOORE October 10, 1831 in Autauga County, daughter of JOHN MOORE and AMANDA ?.

Settled in Autauga Co.
Foshee's book says Reuben came to Williams' canebrake with his mother Charlotte and stepfather Stephen Baker.
Jim and Ruben Popwell came to AL in 1828 from Darling District, SC
found in will book 1856 pp 17, 18, 19 Chilton Co. CH
Reuben was a school teacher, farmer and first tax collector of Baker County.
Information was found in will of stepfather Stephen Baker in Autauga Co.
Buried in the Moore Family Cemetery (wife's parents).
Marriage recorded in book 3 page 314 of Autauga County marriage records
