Trying to find a missing link

I've been trying to find which branch our family stems from but can't seem to get past my great grandparents.
Seems there was a rift during the emmigration in 1910 and nobody knows what my g-grandfather's name was.
I think they came from Edinburgh. My g-grandmother was Mary Porteous (nee Moore). Her husband went to the USA. He apparently was a lay-minister. She and her children landed in Montreal. Her children were William, Kathleen, May, & Edward Fallis Porteous (my grandfather- b circa 1898 or 1895)m.Susan Ann Gilhooley. They all grew up in the Toronto area.
Hope someone can help. Thanks
