We are on the precipice of finally establishing the rumored link between one of the armigerous St. John families who trace their lineage back to Hugues Gospatric DePort b. circa 1000 ad and Scandinavia.
We (the I1a descendants of the group as opposed to the R1bs) have just matched with a man from Sweden (who is also I1a) with a GD=5 (but the mismatches occur at DYS 570 which is very fast and also on CDY), @60 markers. This would place a shared ancestor at roughly the same time as the DePort or a few generations prior.
It would appear that we are beginning to substantiate and verify that the descendants of Hugh Gospatric DePort (whose line married into a female line of St. John) were indeed originally from Scandinavia.
This is really big news from a genealogical standpoint and is beginning to show how important DNA testing is in determining differences from historical fact and fiction.
This is even more succinct as the matches in the database include an Englishman, an Irishman, and an American. I am a bit over the moon about this even though it does not implicate my lineage in any way.
