When my ggggrandfather Nicholas Portrey came to the US from Germany in 1832 the passenger list showed him as Nicholas Portrie. There was also a Waldburga Portrie on the list. There have been various spellings of the last name found in records so we don't know what the original is. We're looking for information on him before he came to the US. He was born in December 1793 in Alsace-Lorrain, France, and as a young man fled to Germany to avoid fighting for Napoleon. He supposedly married a German woman so couldn't return to France so he came to America and settled in Ohio. His wife according to most of the family was Mary Catherine Spaede, but nothing has been found on her. Their children were Michael who left home as a teenager, Joseph who married Mary Ann Stippich, Mary who married Peter Frederick, Catherine who married Lawrence Santo and Charles Joseph who married Carolina Santo. The latter were my gggrandparents. We have had a genealogist in Germany search, but nothing was found on the Portrey family. We found a lot on the Santo family. We hope to get a French genealogist working on this too. Any help with our search is welcome.
