Hi Gillian,

My name is Ian Portsmouth, and I have been researching the "Portsmouth" name for several years in the area around Bedfont, Middlesex, and when I ground to a halt I widened the search into the surrounding counties.
Although there is no apparent connection to my tree, the name Henry Scarlet(t)rang a bell.
All I have is that Ann married Henry Scarlett on May 3 1784 at All Saints Church Laleham, Middlesex. She was resident in Bedfont, and her state was left blank, Henry was a resident of the parish (Laleham), and his state was left blank. They were married by Banns read on 11, 18 and 25th April. She signed her name "Poarchmouth", and he signed his name.
I got this information from the records office in Hounslow in the early 1980s. The reference number I have is DRO 21/7.
They had four children as far as I know:-
George Henry bapt 30 June 1798
Martha bapt 20 Oct 1801
Catherine bapt 19 May 1805
William bapt 28 Feb 1808

An Ann Scarlett was a witness at a marriage of John Portsmouth and Elizabeth Day at All Saints Church, Laleham on Dec 9 1798, by Banns. Ann signed her name.
The other witness was Thomas Perry.
Hounslow Record Office Ref DRO 21/3.

The only other reference to Ann Portsmouth which might be of use is a Baptism on 24 Feb 1764, born to Henry and Susannah Portsmouth, in Wokingham, Berkshire.
Berkshire Record Office Reference BRO DP154 TF24 Wokingham.

Are you researching the Portsmouth name or have Henry and Ann just cropped up in your searching?
If I can help further please get in touch.
