This is a fishing expedition. A little background. I have been researching my ancestor John Poleston Polston Poulson for over12 years. He was born in Virginia about 1793. I find him in the Monongalia County (West) Virginia Census 1820. He married Elizabeth Hoult 1815 in Monongalia. I have exhausted all possibilities except for two. One is he came to the area out of the blue from somewhere else in Virginia. Or, two he changed his name. I am leaning on the second explanation for this reason. The name seems to be liquid spelled one way in one document and a different way in another. I do realize this could be due to the lack of reading or writing skills. But I would like to explore the possibility that the name was changed. The one name that seems the most likely candidate is Postlewait. I was wondering if anyone has any information that would give me some assistance.
