Thanks for the reply! Yes, Maria was my GG-grandmother. My mother and I were both raised in Des Moines. She was sixteen when Maria died and remembers her well. I have one photo of her. Maria and her husband had six or seven children, the oldest of whom was my great-grandmother, Sarah Ellen Anderson b. Nov. 1868. She was 8 when Custer made his fatal mistake. She died in 1965! I recall her telling me about travelling from Ohio to Iowa in a covered wagon and passing Indians along the way!
I have seen another source listing a "Louisa" as the first child, but that is erroneous so far as I know. Perhaps Sarah was also called "Louisa" when young. Sarah had two children - both of whom died from tuberculosis in young adulthood. Her son, named Roy, was only 23 when he died. He had a nine month old baby at the time. That baby was my mother (doing well now at 83!) Now here is the interesting thing ... she was named Mary Louise - but has simply gone by Louise all her life. Is there a connection to the mysterious "Louisa"? Who knows! Anyway, I'd like to compare notes on the ancesters. Thanks again!
