I have been working on my past husband Hank's family for over 15 years now.
In some lines can go back to 1560 in Friesland.
The Posthumus line back to about 1610.
Below, I will paste what I have on his lines.
May be a bit disjointed, because I've pasted several different family lines, which I've posted on line from time to time.
Let me know if anything connects.
I know that there are several lines of POSTHUMUSs and LAANSMAs in North America: NJ, Mid-West, & Canada.
In 1810, Obbo Catharinus POSTHUMUS married a Gyrttie BROERSMA. They lived
Their son Pier Obes married Boukjen Tabes BORKES about 1838; and their son Hinne married Maaike LAANSMA 4/27/1876)
Maaike and Hendriks (Hinne) had many sons, 6-8 and their son Pier married Jennie BAKKER daughter of Andrew and Louise KUIPERS BAKKER.
Ancestors with the surname BROERSMA, who were from
Allingewier, Friesland. The family chose the surname in 1811.
Gryttie (Grietje) Piers BROERSMA (born-1793) married Obbo Cathrinus
POSTHUMUS (born-1/12/1792 - died: 5/9/1859) in 1810.
After their marriage, they moved to Exmorra, then on to Idskenhuisen and
Obbo and Grietje had seven children.
If this is your family, let me know . I have the names and dates of
As for Grietje's parents or siblings, we don't know a thing.
Kuipers and Bakker.
His Great grandparents were Andrew ( I guess, Andreas) and Louise nee Kuipers Bakker. They had a daughter whose Americanized name was Jennie, born 8/17/1879.. She married Pier Posthumus (son of Hendriks and Maaike LAANSMA POSTHUMUS) and they came to the US about 1900.
They settled in the Garfield /Paterson area of New Jersey, just across the
river from New York City.
Jennie died in 1952 in NJ, USA.
This is the family that emigrated from Friesland and came to the US. They settled in the Garfield/ Paterson area of NJ. (The LAANSMA line ended up in Michigan.)
Pier and Jennie were Hank's grandparents.
In the POSTHUMUS-LAANSMA line, Maaike's father Jan Douwes LAANSMA had two wives:
Maaike's mother, Sjoerdtje KATSMA, and Ida KUIPER.
We do not know yet, if Ida is any relation to Louise KUIPERS.
Maaike LAANSMA (born 6/6/1855 Harlingen-died 10/19/1953) married, 4/27/1876, Hendriks POSTHUMUS (born 8/15/1853-Makkum) , son of Pier Obes and Boujken Tabes BORKAS. (Originally, we thought LAANSMA was married to Harke or Piers.)
And, it was Maaike's and Hendrik's son Pier (b:11/6/1879-d:~1936 in NJ) who married (~1899) Jenne BAKKER, daughter of Andrew and Louise nee KUIPER(S) BAKKER.
So. the mystery of the missing LAANSMA generation has been solved.
Obe Rienks Posthumus was married to a Tryntje Harkes 7/3 1740. This was Obe's 2nd marriage. (His first wife was
Idske Pytters Agema).
Harke born 7/19/1741 died young
Tryntje born 3/7/1745 also died young
Harke (a second) boen 1/31/1746
Tryntje (a second)born 12/29/1748
Lolke born 8/10/1752 died 1817
The following notation is in from a copy of a document from a Dr. Gerben Posthumus of Friesland - May 1984:
"The youngest, Lolke (1752-1817), leaves Bolsward and becomes a farmer, firstly in Tjerkwerd and later on (in 1794) in Wolsum- (my birthplace) where he marries with a widow , Akke Symens Ypma (1743-1815). ---------------- After the death of Akke (1815), Lolke returned to Tjerkwerd.
Lolke had no descendants. He died in 1817."
Lolke's brother Harke is my husband's ancestor.
We have more info about Obe's line but this is all we have about Lolke.
Please note our surname list below. It's arranged by country of believed
origin, and a listing of those who emigrated to the US, by State.
