Neil, thanks for your help.
Do you know whether all the Kent parish records are kept in Maidstone. Peter's son John married Caroline Piety in Ashford. In the 1881 Ashford, Kent, census, Caroline is mentioned as the head of household. Thre is no mention of John at the address. There are two other John Pottens who fit the timeframe in the national index - one is divorced and a coachman in Sussex, the other is an inmate, but unmarried. I wonder where I can go from here?
Would the Kentish Studies centre hold all the baptisms for Kent around 1800? It's hard to believe that my Peter Potten would be the son of Neri, as Petere and his children were all labourers.
