Name: Charles POULIOT
Sex: M
Birth: 8 APR 1628 in Vairais, France
Death: 6 AUG 1699 in St. Laurent, Ile d'Orleans, Quebec, Canada
Note:
Charles Pouliot came from the old Province of Perche, Town of
Saint-Cosme-de- Var, in Vairais. This rolling countryside of hills and
valleys was then admi nistered from le Mans, the capital of the Department
of the Maine in France.
In 1650, Sieur Robert Giffard, physician and seigneur from New France
(Canad a) visited Saint-Cosme on a recruiting mission--he held
conferences at the W hite Horse Inn. Charles was impressed by the beauty
of Canada as
related to him by Giffard.
Charles Pouliot was born on 8 April 1628 to Jean and Jean ne Joseph
(Josse) Pouliot. He learned the trade of carpentry from his father .
Sometime shortly before 1655, Charles left France and his younger
brothers . On 21 December 1655, Charles served as godfather to the son of
another car penter, A. Rouillard, also a native of Saint-Cosme.
In the book, " The Terrier duSt-Laurent," Marcel Trudel mentions the
presence of Charles at Ste-Anne- de-Beaupre in 1653, at the home of his
future father-in-law, Mathurin Meunier . On 26 October 1653, Meunier sold
half of his property to Charles Pouliot.
Is it possible that Charles arrived in Canada without being subject to
the t hreeyears of service required, according to the custom of the
times? Otherw ise how could he have become a landowner upon his arrival
in 1653? Maybe he actually arrived in Canada in 1650-51. We do know
that Charles had become a full-fledged citizen by 1658, for that year he
hireed out as a carpenter to N icolasHuot, Guillaume Couture and Claude
Charron. Then on 22 October 1662, he bought two arpents of land from
Robert Laberge for 120 livres. This lot was located between neighbors
Claude Petiot and Jean Ouimet, about 2 miles we st of the church of
Chateau-Richer. On 15 March 1664, he acquired the proper ty of surgeon
Petiot, next to his own, but by 5 July 1663, he had sold it to Francois
Gariepy.
It appears that Charles was more successful at carpentry t han at
romance. In 1662, he fell in love with Marie Fayette, a beautiful lad y
from Paris. However, he should have been warned by the fact that she had
just broken her engagement, signed 3 October 1661, with Jean Durand.
Charl es courted Marie with apparent success, because on 20 January 1662,
they sign ed a marriagecontract. Then, Marie was swept off her feet by
Nicolas Huot f rom St.-Laurent, Ile d'Orleans--they were married in the
summer of the same y ear.
Charleswas disconsolate during the next three years. Then at
Ste-Anne -de-Beaupre, he fell in love once more with Francoise Meunier,
daughter of M athurin and Francoise Fafard. Her parents were the first
white people to be married at Montreal on 3 September 1647. Francoise
was born on 13 September 1653, at Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre where she had been
baptized in the home of her p arents by Fr. Paul Rageuneau, SJ, on 17
September 1653.
Jean and Francoise s igned a contract of marriage on 5 June 1667.
Francoise was not quite 14 year s old, while Jean was 39.
Charles de Lauzon, Seigneur of Charny, signed a cont ract with Charles on
8 August 1664 for the construction of a windmill on his seigneurie on the
Ile d'Orleans. The contract called for Pouliot to design, construct and
erect the windmill, with all the working parts in order, for t he price of
1000livres. If this windmill was ever built, it must have been
constructed entirely of wood because no trace of it has ever been found
on the Ile d'Orleans.
At Quebec, on 26 February 1668, Mgr de Laval made a persona l deal with
Charles for the construction of his windmill on the south shore o f the
Ile d'Orleans. The price was agreed at 1110 livres. The Lord Bishop w as
to provide the nails, tools, millstones and the necessary wood to be
tra nsported close to the place of construction. Charles did not have to
concern himself with the masonry, but he did have to cut down the trees,
hew the bea ms and render them ready to be put to work; also
