According to James P. Snell's History of Somerset County New Jersey c. 1881 page 702 Captain Jacob Powelson came to New Jersey in 1640. "The family was originally from Norway, but removed to Holland some years before any of the name came to this country."
Whether Jacob was born in Holland or Norway I don't know. Hope this helps narrow the search. Please let me know if you find any more out. I also am descended from Captain Jacob.
