Thanks for your info - - Here is some info that I received from Sharon Marang Dana, back in March:
DESCENDANTS OF CORNELIS POWELSON
Cornelis POWELSON was born ca. 1671. He married Jannetje ANDRIES, daughter of Andries JERIAENS and Annetje PRAT (PRAA?) on 11 Oct., 1696, in New York, NY.
Known children, order not known...
Anitie Pauelsen (Agnes?)
Powel Powelson was born 17 Oct. 1716 in New Brunswick, Somerset County, NJ. He married Magdalena (Lena) SMOCK , daughter of Jan SMOCK and Leah FONTYN, before 1751, in NJ.
He died ca. 1805 in Hampshire County, VA (W. VA?) - - in 1805, Hampshire County should have been a part of Frederick County.
Frederick County is the location of Hedgesville, which was established by three brothers of my ancestor,Jonas Hedges (1716 - 1804), husband of one Agnes/Anitie Pauelsen/Powelson (1719 - 1809). It is said that Agnes had a sister named Rebecca. (?) It is also said that Agnes' name was "Agnes Powelson Van Meter Hedges". All of the Hedges men were married in their home of Frederick, Maryland. This is where some Powelsons located, as well as some Van Meters. One Rebecca was married to a Johann Van Meter, who died in Maryland about 1734/5. She had two children, Johann, Jr. and Joanna. She married Solomon Hedges, one of the three brothers, above. (Coincidentally, Rebeccas' brother, Abraham, married Ruth Hedges, sister to Solomon and Jonas...). While in W. VA., Jonas was made guardian of Johann, Jr. and Joanna. These children were mentioned in the will of one Jan Van Meter, father of Johann and grand-father of the two children. Jonas was called, "their uncle". Was this because he was the husband of their AUNT??? Or, possibly, because he was the brother to their step-father???
Johannes POWELSON was born in April, 1719, in Somerville, Somerset County, NJ. He died on 17 July, 1788, in Bedminster Township, Somerset County, NJ, at the age of 69.
...No "Rebecca" in this particular list...
I have seen other mentions of the SMOCK and PRAA families, which seems to tie us in to their lines. I have worked with other Van Meter members who are only frustrated at the lack of information available on this generation.
I have also seen more than one mention of Jacobs' and Hendricks' names in the Powelson line...I can't verify the listing, above, but don't be too confused by that name, "Hendrick", being in the wrong generation. I've learned to look for two given names, for certainties, and also to be alert for those families which give the fathers' first name as the childs' last name...possibly as Hendrick Powelson having a child named Jacob Hendrickson, etc.
I'm not sure if this is of any help in your particular quest, but will be glad to share any other, related info which I might have. Good Luck.
