Jim,

The 1881 Warwickshire census has the following family in Birmingham

James Pownall, 42, Boiler maker of Warrington
Mary Pownall, 41, wife of Bolton
George Pownall, 18, Gasfitter of Sutton Oaks, Lancashire

There are five other children listed, two of which born in Widnes, very near to Runcorn.

This looks like your George Alfred Pownall.
