Actually, to my knowledge, there is NO evidence (other than the
somewhat similar spelling of the name) that the Pownalls were descended
from the Paynels. The fact that some poor genealogies, such as the
Alfred R. Justice account (source for many of the rest) and the awful
Bye genealogy (plagiarized in part from the Justice account), claim a
connection is, of course, without any value, since no supporting evidence
is presented for the claim in these genealogies.
