Need hometown of Pozniko/Posnjakov

I have located the ship's manifests for my husband's grandparents,
Michael and Maria Pozniko. They traveled separately. He came a few
months ahead of her and the children, both in 1907. On each manifest
the surname is spelled POSNJAKOV/PASNJAKOVA. On Mikhail POSNJAKOV's
manifest his last residence is listed as Tcheringoff, Chernigoff,
Russia. On Maria POSNJAKOVA's manifest her last residence is
Tsernikow, Starsbabowskaja, Russia. I realize Tchernigoff and
Tsernikow are two different spellings for the same village. I was told
by their daughter about 15 years ago that the home town was near Gomel
and that they were from Byelorussia/White Russia. How true that is, I
can't say, as she was not yet born when her parents and 3 older
siblings immigrated. I was also told it was near "Novy Babovitch". Can
anyone point me in the right direction for this village? Does it still
exist? Or was it wiped out in WWII as I was also told. If it helps
any, Maria's maiden name was Rebinikow/Hrebenick.
