Lt Thomas Praster

To All Prasters,
Lt. Thomas Praster was in the Union Army during the Civil War. He commanded an all colored company. After being discharged, he returned to civilian life and married Marian Frances Sawyer, the daughter of Elias Sawyer, who my cousin says was from Ohio.
Thomas and his wife came West and joined up with the family of their daughter, Angie Marian, who had married John Merrihew-Guy in California.
They all finally settled in San Luis Obispo County and after a long life, Thomas and Marian are buried in the beautiful, old cemetery in San Luis Obispo.
I am wondering about the name "Praster" and where it originated. I have been told it is German.
I would like to hear from all Prasters.
