Dr. Virginia Lee Prentice died September 26, 2002. at the age of 80, following a brief illness. A private service will be held at a later date.
A native of Chippewa County, Wisc. she retired in White County after a long and succesful career as an enviromental research specialist and college professor. She was the daughter of the late Sylvester Lee and Florence Wade Prentice.
For several years she was the director of the Olson Institute at Northland College where she specialized in remote sensing of the enviroment using satellite sensors to gather data for the improvement of conservation, agriculture, forestry and management of natural resourses.
She was a Fellow of the American Academy of Science a member of the Association of Women Geographers, and was a life member of the Sierra Club. She was a pilot, an outdoorsman, and traveled widely throughout the world.
Upon retirement she settled in Georgia, became an active participant in the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association, was a founding member of the Georgia Mountains Unitarian Universalist Church, and spent her summers working as a volunteer archivist at various Elderhostel locations throughout the United States.
She is survived by a brother, Wade W. Prentice of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two nephews, Mark Baden of Sherwood, Ohio and Blake Prentice of Fort Wayne, Ind. and many friends.
Memorial gifts should be made in her name to the Georgia Mountains Unitarian Universalist Church, the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association, or to a charity of choice.
Bridges Funeral Home of Athens was in charge if the arrangements.
