I am now researching my Prentiss line and saw your message. Here's some information that might help.
There was a large Prentiss family in the Boston area. Caleb Prentiss, b. Feb 21, 1721/22 in Cambridge, MA; baptized Feb 25, 1722 at 1st Church in Cambridge, MA; d. Nov 19, 1772 in Cambridge, MA; m. Lydia Whittemore Sep 17, 1744.
Children of Caleb Prentiss and Lydia Whittemore:
*Caleb, b. Apr 1745, died young
*Caleb, b. 1746, in Cambridge, MA; d. in Reading, MA
*Elizabeth, b. 1748
*Samuel, b. 1749/50, died young
*Samuel, b. 1753 in Cambridge, MA; d. 1815 Gorham, ME; buried in Old Gorham Cemetary, Gorham, ME
*William, b. 1754
*Henry, b. 1757, died young
*Lydia, b. Jan 1759
*Henry, b. Dec 1759
Notice there were three sons who died young (Caleb, Samuel, and Henry) but were "replaced" by another son with the same name. I also thought it was interesting that the last two were born the same year; one in January, one in December. The mother (Lydia) must have had an amazing life.
You should pay attention to the second Samuel, b. 1753. Although all the siblings were born in Cambridge, MA, three of the sons moved away. Samuel to Gorham, ME, which is outside of Portland. (I'm from Maine originally and have two sisters currently living in Gorham so this detail caught my eye.) I, on the other hand, am trying to establish a connection with Caleb Prentiss the younger, b. 1746 because he moved to Reading, MA where he was a minister during the Lexington Alarm. William, moved on to Lexington, KY. I think this is somewhat unusual that 3 of them moved away.
I suspect this information may be significant because you are looking for the name Prentiss, you have a Samuel, and you have connections to Maine. Good luck in your search. If you think you might be connected to this family, you should go to
<www. familysearch.org> and search for your Samuel Prentiss there. Note that some spell it as Prentice.
