Thank you, Penny, for replying to my message. I was in Yorkshire last April and actually went to Scarthingwell in search of the parish church. But, Alas, it's not there anymore. There are, however, a large catholic church and a seniors' home.

The Borthwick Institute was claosed at the time so I pursued my inquitries through the York City Archives and discovered that my great great grandfather, William Prest, was listed as a 'poor child' of St. Crux. I am still looking for a record of his birth and the only reference on the IGI that ties in gives Scarthingwell as the place of birth.

I am wondering if he was illegitimate and thus became a ward of the parish?? I shall be very interested to see what you have on the Prests of Scarthingwell.

Thank you.
