Priebe, rhymes with "liebe"
Priebe is a name that no one knows how to spell nor pronounce. My family in Ottawa, Ontario pronounces it PREE-BEE, despite the fact that the name is derived from Pribyslav and Pribyslaus, and should be pronounced PREE-BUH.
According to the Enclopedia
Britannica, both were slavic rules in Eastern Germany at the time of the last millenium who were beaten by the invading and crusading christrian Prussians.
In both cases, the slavs came to some kind of accommodation with the invaders (Albert the Bear and Henry the Lion), in one case creating Brandenberg, and in the other establishing what is now the Duchy of Mecklemburg (the only slavic royal house in Germany). This suggests that we are Slavic Germans.Has anyone else checked this out?
