I looked at twoi sources and got two results.

The Mormons' Ancestral File
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
has:

George PRIOR (AFN: W6SR-00)
Birth: Abt 1826 Summit Co., Ohio
Death: 9 May 1864 Battle Of The Wilderness
Father: William PRIOR (AFN: 2CLD-J3)
Mother: Polly CULVER (AFN: BQ75-3R)

Ancestry's Civil War Soldiers data base

http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/military/cwrd/main.htm

has two:

George W Prior ,
Residence: Essex, Vermont
Enlistment Date: 31 August 1862
Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Side Served: Union
State Served: Vermont
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 31 August 1862
Enlisted in Company I, 6th Infantry Regiment Vermont on 15 September 1862.
Deserted Company I, 6th Infantry Regiment Vermont on 21 January 1863
Received a disability discharge Company I, 6th Infantry Regiment Vermont on 25 January 1864

George W Prior ,
Enlistment Date: 23 October 1861
Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Side Served: Union
State Served: Ohio
Unit Numbers: 1708 1708
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 23 October 1861 at the age of 28
Enlisted in Company D, 6th Cavalry Regiment Ohio on 23 October 1861.
Promoted to Full Sergeant on 14 December 1861
POW on 10 August 1862
Promoted to Full Sergeant 1st Class on 01 April 1864
Killed Company D, 6th Cavalry Regiment Ohio on 09 May 1864 in Near Childsbury, VA

It looks like the records for two men with the same name got mixed up. The Vermont George didn't die in the Wilderness. I have no idea how he got "Distinguished" service when he deserted.
