Origins of Margaret Helderman
Posted by: Ron Nota Date: June 17, 2001 at 05:40:28

Sorting through the genealogies on ancestor.com, I believe we can shed light on the heretofore obscure origins of MARGARET HELDERMAN, wife of JOHN PROFFER. While this is second hand information and may contain an occasional error, I believe it points everyone in the right direction for future investigation.

The proper surname appears to have been HALDEMAN. Over the years it became corrupted to HELDERMAN, HALDERMAN, HOLDERMAN, HILDERMAN and HILTERMAN.

MARGARETíS great-grandfather, NICHOLAS HALDEMAN is the sire to the American line. He was born on 15 May 1686 in Thurn, Swizterland. In or about the year 1720, NICHOLAS and his wife MARY came to America with three young sons. Probably disembarking at Philadelphia, they settled four miles north of the colonial city in Germantown, Montgomery Co., Pa. After their arrival the HALDEMANS had four more children. Sometime between the years 1750-1760, NICHOLAS and some of his offspring moved south to north Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. NICHOLAS died there in September 1762.

MARGARETíS grandfather appears to have been CHRISTIAN HALDEMAN. He was born in Switzerland before 1715. He lived out his days in Montgomery Co., Pa., dying in the year 1800 in the area of lower Salford Township.

MARGARETíS father appears to have been JOHANNES HALDEMAN/HELDERMAN, who was born in 1738. MARGARET was probably the oldest child of this family. Some research says JOHANNES died in 1815 in Pennsylvania, but I suspect this is a case where two men named JOHANNES HALDEMAN/HELDERMAN have become intertwined. JOHANNES, son of CHRISTIAN, had a brother named NICHOLAS HELDERMAN, who volunteered as a Private for North Carolina during the Revolution for the promise of land. NICHOLAS was the one who drew the HELDERMAN clan from Pennsylvania to Lincoln County, North Carolina. NICHOLAS processed his land claim in Lincoln County in 1809.

MARGARET was born in 1760 at either lower Salford Twn., Montgomery Co., Pa. or north Coventry Twn., Chester Co., Pa. If we are on the right track, then it would suggest that, JOHN PROFFER and MARGARET HELDERMAN were married about 1780 in either Montgomery Co. or Chester Co., Pa.
MARGARET reportedly had three brothers: NICHOLAS, JACOB and GOTTLIEB. I believe her brother JACOB is the one listed as JACOB HILDERMAN, Sr. in the 1821-22-23 Tax Records for Cape Girardeau Co, Mo.

Again, this requires further research and verification, but I believe it points everyone in the right direction.
If anyone has anything to add, please post it for the benefit of all. Thank you.
