Marlene, Thank you so much for this information! The Cheney who is my Great-Grandfather was Cheney Russell PROUTY.He was mustered out in Calhoun County and received a Presidential appointment as the Collector of Customs at Indianola, TX.He did survive both hurricanes of 1874 & 1886.The Customshouse was "officially" closed in 1890 and the new one openned at the Port of Entry at Eagle Pass, TX.G-Grandpa and his surviving staff was reassigned to the Eagle Pass office as the new Collector of Customs for the area. All of this info has been verified by the U.S. Customs Office Historical Department, The Diary of Capt. Leon Poor, the Victoria Texas Historical Dept, the information from Louisie PROUTY and Family verbal histories. He met my G-Grandma Juanita MACIAS in Eagle Pass, he was 60 years old and she was 14...they had 3 children. Please keep in touch...with any more info.I am trying to verify if he had a wife and children before he met my G-Grandma.Love & Hugs, Tyger
