I had wondered about the spelling on the name, as I could not find a Sedwich Prouty anywhere at any time. I wondered if it could possibly be Shadrick Prouty whom I found in the Middlebury Township, Tioga Co. PA census of 1850.

In that census I found the following information:
Dwelling 80 Family 83

Shadrick Prouty 35, Carpenter b. Mass.
Roxanny Prouty 32, b. N.Y
James S Prouty 9, b. N.Y
Patience H Prouty 6, b. N.Y
Jason L Prouty 5, b. N.Y
Ezra Prouty 62, (Farmer?) b. Mass

The very next family is:
Dwelling 81 Family 84

Chester W. Prouty 32, Laborer b. N.Y
Minerva Prouty 30, b. N.Y
William Prouty 11, b. N.Y
Harmon Prouty 9, b. N.Y

And further down:
Dwelling 172 Family 178

Calvin Hammond 28, Lumberman b. N.Y
Noah Hammond 23, Laborer b. N.Y
Ira Smith (Smitt?} 22, Laborer b. N.Y
Ed Smith (Smitt?) 19, Laborer b. N.Y
Levi Prouty 32, Laborer b. N.Y
Elizabeth Prouty 32, b. N.Y
Levi Prouty 9, b. N.Y
Israel A Smith (Smitt) 43, Laborer b. N.Y

Ever since I found this information I have felt that they have to be related somehow to my line. Middlebury Township is just over the county line from Springfield Township in Bradford Co. where my line is living in 1850. However, I have not been able to connect them in anyway.

I have Corresponded with Janet Brock who has Prouty brothers Chester, Hiram and Nelson in her line who were in Canada and then in New York, and thought to have been in New York prior to going to Canada. This interested me greatly since Jeptha Prouty named three of his sons, Chester, Hiram and Nelson who later removed to Iowa and settled in Palo Alto Co. I thought it more than a coincidence that the names were running the same in the two families. However, we have never been able to connect the two families.

I have long rejected the theory that Elijah Prouty and Chester Prouty of Bradford County in the early 1800's, were brothers. Clearly the two are connected to each other, but there appears to be an age difference of about 30 years according to the little bit of information I have been able to find. I find it more likely that they were father and son with Elijah being the father of Chester.

According to the "Pioneer and Patriot Families of Bradford Co." the two were supposedly brothers and sons of a John Prouty, but there is absolutely no evidence to support this anywhere.

Some descendants of Chester and Mary Lytle have long claimed that they were the sons of John Prouty and Lucy Gleason but there is no evidence of this either and no record of an Elijah or Chester ever being born to this couple. (Hence my other question)

Trying to track these two Prouty lines has been a very frustating experience. I have tracked down dozens of leads and all have turned out negative. The more I find, the more it appears that an alien spaceship simply deposited them in PA in the early 1800's.
