Although the Elijah Prouty and Esther Kellogg is another theory for our line, there is no mention of this couple anywhere that I have been able to find outside of the Kellogg genealogy. While Pope says that this Elijah was born in 1757, I have not been able to find a record of this birth. All Elijah Prouty's that I have found birth records for have been accounted for in different lines and families. So I'm not sure from whence Pope got his information.

I did find a marriage record in the Shutesbury MA vital records for Elijah Prouty and Esther(?). The photo copy of that record on microfilm is very bad and I would love to be able to see the original if it still exists. The last name of Esther on that record appears to Start with a Cel and most of the rest of it is unreadable. It is possible that someone spelled Kellogg as Cellog even though the name is spelled correctly most everywhere else I've found it. However, because the page on the film is almost black at that point, it becomes very "iffy" as to what the name is. So at this point I simply have to "act as if" it is the marriage of Elijah and Esther Kellogg and work towards proving and verifying that record and finding out what happened to this couple.

This is the only mention of this couple in the Shutesbury records. There are no children born to this couple listed there. The only mention of children are in the Kellogg genealogy which mentions a Hiram and Esther. No mention of these children anywhere else that I can find either.

I should mention also that the entire Shutesbury record book on film was a very bad copy and many pages were almost impossible to read even though it looked like the original record was in fairly good shape. Also, the book was not in any kind of order and it was not indexed. Things appeared to have been entered hap-hazardly all over a page as the "thought came to someone". Dates bounced all over the book and in the absence of lined pages it got pretty messy.

The Proute genealogy has the name of several children that supposedly were born to Elijah including a Chester (Chester of PA who married Mary Lytle?) but other than Jeptha and possibly Chester (if as above) I have not been able to find any shred of evidence to support the existance of the others.

There is the possibility that the Hiram that Janet Brock descends from is the Hiram that Pope says is a son of Elijah, but there again, there is no information to support this theory. I have tried to find wills and land records for some of these people hoping that the clue that will tigger the connection will "magically" appear and resolve the mystery surrounding this branch of the Prouty family.

I haven't had much time the last couple of years to devote to research (was without a computer for almost a year) and I don't have the finances to travel. Most of my information comes from books and Microfilm records I get via Inter-library loan. So it is a very slow process indeed. Someday, I need to get to the Sutro Library in San Francisco where I can spend an entire day (need to spend an entire month) as they have a considerable amount of information there. Only a small portion of it is available through inter-Library loan to the State Library here in Sac.

If you have the sources from which you have obtained your information on Ezra Prouty and his family, I would love to have them so I can further check and be able to document my own information.

Thanks for all your help.
