After NY they moved to Knox County, Ohio. Anson married Elizabeth Helms, native of PA, whose family had moved to Ohio about 1800. They left Ohio for Iowa but were only there a year or two when gold was discovered in CA. In 1850 they came west. Anson died coming west and Elizabeth continued with nine children. They settled in Ione, CA where Elizabeth purchased a ranch. A few Proutys still live there (Mom and Dad are buried there, as are Elizabeth and some of her children and grandchildren). Joseph Prouty, one of her sons, moved to Southern CA. Had a family reunion in Ione about 1980 and were surprised at the number who showed up. About 200. Most lived within a 60 mile radius of Ione. (I am 40 miles away)
Records indicate the Proutys who moved to NY from Vermont did so to gain a pension and land for service in the Revolutionary War. Vermont refused to pay for service; NY offered land in Ohio. When the war started, they enlisted from Washington County, NY.
