1890. Asher Thompson "Ashe" PROUTY was born on 29 Jul 1832 in Chesterville, Knox Co., Ohio.11366 His mother recorded his birth in her bible. He appeared on the census on 30 Aug 1850 in Jasper Co., Iowa.11367 He resided in 1910 in Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa. 11368 He bought the farms of his father and brothers and that of his sister Maria P. Dooley for $300.00 according to deeds recorded in Jasper City, Iowa on July 30, 1859. He died on29 Sept 1867 in Newton and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Emmetsburg, Palo Alto Co, Iowa.11369 There is no date on his gravestone. The story of Asher T. Prouty is one that early settlers enjoyed relating and the fact the story lived on until the history was published in 1878 probably means that the tale grew in the telling and we may not be certain now what the actual circumstances were. At any rate we may be sure that the young Proutys were men of spirit. During the year 1849, Asher T. Prouty, who seems to have been by all accounts, a hot headed, ungovernable youth, committed some misdeed, probably rebellion at home and was by his own father turned over to the authorities at Newton. While in their custody he effected an escape one night and took to the brush for shelter while he considered his future movement. Someone in town owned a pet deer, which had been roused by his steps and which passed near by him sniggling the air. Not being able to see the animal clearly, the young man concluded he had better classify it as a catamount or a bear, at least, and for safety, climbed a tree, where he remained all night, was restored to the anxious sheriff next morning. He was married to Clara Alice MCGILL (daughter of James MCGILL and Sarah) on 16 May 1862 in Newton. 11370 Clara Alice MCGILL was born in 1844 in Ohio and appeared on the census of 27 Sep 1850 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, and on 6 Jun 1860 in Newton. Her parents were both born in England. Asher Thompson "Ashe" PROUTY and Clara Alice MCGILL had the following children:

       +3736       i.       May PROUTY.
       +3737       ii.       Henry Clay PROUTY.
       +3738       iii.       Jay PROUTY.
