William Provan (b. Jul 6, 1833) came from Scotland in 1852. Married Jane Young (b. July 17, 1841) April 3, 1863. William and Jane lived in Traer, Tama Co., IA.
William and Jane had 2 children, twin daughters: Jeanette Steele Provan (married Andrew McCutcheon), and Agnes Waddell Provan (married David Hain Keith)

William Provan then married Lydia Klingaman Gross)December 15, 1863, they had 9 children: Anna Jane Provan (married Jesse Cotton), Ella Mary Provan (married Ellsworth L. Dowd), Stella Provan (married Sever Anderson), Laura Belle Provan (also married Sever Anderson-after Stella died), James Provan (died young), Harriet Provan (married Robert Hain Keith), William Provan (married Paulina Gruba), Edna Gertrude Provan (married James Clowes), Sam Provan (married Jennie Bell Hoople), and Frank Provan (married Lena [?]).
Lydia Klingaman Gross brought a son from her previous marriage to the family-George Gross.
William Provan and Lydia moved to Clark, South Dakota (then Dakota Territory) in 1884.
Much of this information comes from a family reunion genealogy compiled in 1964. Find a link? Let me know. I have some pictures of the Clowes, Provan, and Keith families (Clowes/Provan is my wife's direct line).
