Thanks for the clarification re: the Rawlings men of Illinois and east Tn. I recently found Thomas Province's Alabama Land Warrant for military service, and it confirmed he was the same individual that was both a private in Perkin's Battalion 7th Regmt Madison Co Miss Territory volunteers War of 1812, and the corporal in Stephenson's 2nd Illinois Volunteer Regt Black Hawk War 1832. Lots of Madison Co Al families moved to Franklin Co Ill area ca 1828-29 it seems but I haven't found a particular reason yet - maybe cheaper indian lands for sale. In any case some of the families returned to Madison Co area by mid 1830s and Thos Province family was one of those...homesick maybe?
