I have just read (again) the will of John "Schoolmaster" Prowse, as extracted by William L. Murphy. I am confused. After studying the punctuation in the extract I am unsure as to what was intended???????
In naming the executors, did John Prowse mean:
1. Samuel Bourden (my) son in law, or
2. (my) son in law Isaac Spence, or
3. Samuel Bourden('s) son in law Isaac Spence ??
Is it possible that Samuel Bourden was married to a PROWSE ?
Dick
It is my understanding that Samuel Bourden (Bowden) was his trusted friend and his brother-in-law.Isaac Spence is his stepson, thus son-in-law.John married Mary Elizabeth Bowden, daughter of Nicholas Bowden and Prudence Davis. So, Samuel and John's wife, Mary Elizabeth were brother and sister. Their children were Samuel, John, Nicholas, Baker, and Mary Elizabeth. I don't quite understand why John didn't refer to Samuel as his brother in law rather than trusted friend.
Mary Elizabeth Bowden married 1st to Isaac Spence. around 1769 in Duplin Co, NC.Isaac died about 1775. Elizabeth married John Prowse about 1783. I haven't found a record, just est. based on my theory that he is the father of Thomas Prowse (Prouse) of Muhlenberg Co, KY.
I recently found the following:

There is a strong possibility that John Prowse of Duplin Co, NC is a son of Thomas Prouse born Mar 2, 1739 in St. Peter's Parish, Talbot Co., MD to George and Jane Prouse of the same place.
