It has been some time since I worked on my Pruyn connections. I am not familiar with a source by Reid, so I'm not able to comment there.
The Ontario land grants were compensation for Americans who were loyal to the British during the American Revolution...therefore, there were no grants until the end of the war. (I do not know when the first grants were given specifically...just when my ancestors grants were filed.) I also know that the grants were extended to the children of loyalists and that their lands could be granted directly to them at a particular age (I think 21.) And...since no grant was automatic, they did require paperwork, some folks may have applied at what seems to "late" dates. I am not familiar with the outer bounds of when these grants were no longer available. I don't have any idea why someone who was eligible for a land grant wouldn't have secured it...even if they only wished to sell the land later.
Who is Sidney? Sidney Pruyn? Or a place?
One source that I consulted was "The Pruyn Family in America" written in the 1890s and quoting a reference as the Pruyn family Bible held by Mrs. Ovens (she was my great-grandfather's aunt.) I have looked for this Bible for about 10 years now without luck...
Matthew Pruyn left a great many records behind in Canada and it is difficult to do much work there without stumbling over him. He is a collateral line to my family. I am not familiar with the Thomas who married Amelia Bush...and Frans/Francis is a name that pops up in almost every generation.
I am no expert on this family nor on United Loyalist families. So, if you reach a conclusion about any of this Pruyn bunch...let me know.
Cindy
