Hi,
When I was stationed in Germany in the early 70's, a German I worked with showed me an old map (circa 1830) of Germany at that time. There was an area called Putt (with the umlaut)in central northwestern Germany. He told me the name means "pool" as in a pool of water, or a well, or something of that sort. True or not, I do not know.
