Researdh indicates that all the various spellings of the German Pfaffenberger can be traced back to the founding family that arrived in 1733. Spellings such as Puffinbarger, Puffanberger, Puffenbarger, etc. are decended from the oldest son of the founding family who migrated to Augusta County, Virgina, now West Virginia, before the French and Indian War. The history of the family is documented in "From Germany to Antietam, the early history of the Pfaffenberger family, Second edition," Xlibris, 2003.
