Pugh Surname DNA Project Update
We have updated the colorized version of our data chart. It is now a page on the Web that you can establish a permanent link to.Here is the URL:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pughdna/index_files/PughProjectResultsAnalysis.htmhttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pughdna/index_files/PughProjectResultsAnalysis.htm
There are some pending results that may give us some very interesting additional information. We will do our best to update the chart as soon as this information becomes available.Just to highlight a few of the things that we have learned so far through our DNA Project:
Pugh Lineage I (and all sub-lineages)
This group is our greatest success story. We are getting close to establishing markers which are indicative of particular branches of the Lewis and Ann line.Future participants who are fortunate to match one of these branches will be able to use DNA to focus their research like a laser.Anything that anyone can share with regard to paper trail would be most appreciated. This is Daniela’s line.
Pugh Lineage IIa1.1
This group has some very exciting news for Pugh genealogists. Our two participants have established a link between Evan Pugh (b.c. 1823) who married Sarah Cloud and Abraham Peugh (b.c. 1770) who married Sara Ellen Asbery. This is a relationship that has not been discovered through paper trail evidence.A group of genealogists is currently working on how to dig deeper on this branch.
Pugh Lineage IIb1.2
Franklin Pugh (b. 1807) and Henry Pugh (b. 1710) have been moved out of Lineage I and have founded their own Pugh Lineage. While their DNA profile is similar to that of Lineage I, we now know that they are a distinct Pugh lineage.
Pugh Lineage IIIa
This is my group. It includes the Robert ap Hugh ( b.c. 1670) and Sarah Evans line, the Hugh Pugh (b.c. 1712) and Helena Brink line, the Daniel Pugh (b.c. 1812) and Elizabeth Fox line and the Lewis Pugh (b.c. 1811) and Mary “Polly” Wright line.We now know that the Hampshire County and Hancock County, WV Pugh lines are related and the Butler County, PA Pughs are related to the other two.My Lewis was first found in Beaver County, PA in 1840.Although we know that there is a connection between the Hampshire County and Hancock County Pughs, there is now some doubt regarding the Robert ap Hugh connection. There may be an error in the paper trail evidence that connects Robert to the John Pugh who is found with Daniel in early VA census data. There may actually be three distinct Pugh lines that grew out of Hampshire County, WV.We need some representatives of the Robert ap Hugh line and the Ellis and Sinah line to help us resolve this question.
Pugh Lineage IVa
This is the James M. Pugh (b.c. 1665) and Joan Price line.We had already established the DNA profile of this line back to Elijah Pugh (b.c. 1760) and Ruth de St. Julien by our first two representatives of this line.We now know that Jacob Pugh (b. Oct 30, 1767) who married Dorcas Glasgow, is of this line. This is another great success story. Not only does the DNA evidence support that Jacob was the son of Enoch Pugh (b.c. 1735) and Esther, but it proves all three branches back to James M. and Joan’s son, Thomas Pugh, Sr. (b.c. 1703) and Elizabeth Richardson. We struck gold on this one!!
Pugh Lineage IVb
This is the line of David Pugh (b.bef. 1662) and Katherine Price. It has long been assumed that David was the brother to James M. Pugh.DNA evidence does not support this relationship. We really need some more James M. Pugh representatives (particularly descendents of the sons other than Thomas, Sr.).We also need some known descendents of the David and Katherine line to help us determine what the actual relationship was between the James M. and David who married Price sisters.
It seems that we are really on a roll now.We are growing at a rate of 2-3 participants per month. The more participants we have the more we will learn. Our new Website at RootWeb is:

It is under construction so check back weekly to see what we have accomplished. We also have a Pugh-DNA mailing list at RootsWeb.The URL to subscribe is:
