Clementine Warren Whitaker Warren Ancestry Update

Two extremely good sources (see notes below May 2009) say that Great-grandmother Clementine Adams Warren Whitaker's father was a Warren: 1. Great Uncle John Walter Whitaker's death certificate gives his mother's name as Clementine Warren 2. Cousin Zella Hash Speaks told me that her Aunt (my Great-grandmother) "Clem" told her that her father had been a Warren.

Here you will find several pieces of documentation which supports my theory that Great-grandmother Clementine (Adams) Warren Whitaker (10 Mar. 1868- 28 Nov. 1841) was the granddaughter of Rev. Matthew & Martha Baker Warren and proving that indeed Rev. Matthew Martha Baker Warren were the closest Warren link to 2ggm Malinda Tompkins Adams Hash.

Matthew Warren was the son of Charles & Caty Floyd Warren.

Caty Floyd Warren was the daughter of Matthew Floyd and sister of Abraham Floyd, Sr.

Earliest Floyd & Chaney link:

Abraham Floyd Jr., grandson of Matthew Floyd, was born in 1787 at Burke Co., North Carolina. He married Jane "Jincy" Chaney on 17 December1812 at Pulaski Co., Kentucky.

Jane Chaney Floyd, Jr. was the daughter of John & Susannah Hill Chaney the G-grandparents of Amos Chaney married Lucinda Morgan.

------------------------------------------------------------

G-grandmother Clementine was born March 10, 1868. She married, 25 Aug. 1884, Great-grandfather Henry Mills Whitaker under the name of Adams.

In 3ggm Elizabeth Wilburn T(h)ompkins will of 25 Aug. 1873 she mentions 'This my desire that my daughter Malinda Adams have one bee hive.'

Since Martha Baker Warren was the daughter of Andrew Baker m/1 unknown and m/2 Hannah Roberts? and Cyrus Adams was the son of James Adams m/2 Andrew Baker's widow Hannah Roberts? Baker this makes Hannah the step-mother of Cyrus Adams (step-mother-in-law to 2ggm Malinda) and Martha Baker Warren the step-sister-law of Cyrus & 2ggm Malinda.

Per Cousin Jeff Renner: In a message dated 6/20/2 10:24:32 10:, jrenner@designisolutions.com writes: Jim, the reason I asked about the Whitaker Cemetery is that I can find where it was in the Mills Whitaker land. Henry may be the first Whitaker to own the property. It looks like it was part of an 1807 grant to Charles Warren, which is the earliest grant I can find in the Line Creek area, at least issued to a family who actually lived in the area. Charles Warren was the father of Rev. Matthew Warren married Martha Baker in 1816.

G-grandmother Clementine's mother Malinda Tompkins Adams Hash during her lifetime in Laurel Co., KY lived a stones throw away from the Adams, Baker, Morgan, Trosper, Arnold and Whitaker families.

Step 2ggf Cyrus Adams' brother Zachary Adams married Caroline Wilburn; 17 May, 1857, in Laurel Co., KY. Caroline Wilburn no doubt was a kinswoman of 3ggm Elizabeth "Betty" Wilburn Tompkins.

2ggm Malinda Elizabeth Tompkins (1835-1904) m/1 Cyrus Adams Adams (c1818-1862); 25 May 1853. She kept the surname of Adams until she m/2 John Hash, 15 March 1877.

2ggm MALINDA'S children (out of wedlock): SARAH, b. 1848 before she married CYRUS ADAMS; ELI, b. 1864, MARY, b, 1866, CLEMENTINE, b. 1868, born after the death of CYRUS ADAMS, in Nelson, Co., KY 1862, took the surname of ADAMS. MALINDA TOMPKINS ADAMS & CYRUS ADAMS' Children were: CHARLES, b. 1854, BURNETTY F. , 1856, MIRA, 1857 & CYRUS, JR. , b. 1860. (Children of MALINDA TOMPKINS ADAMS HASH & JOHN HASH are: JOHN TILFORD HASH, b. 1871, NANCY JANE HASH, b. 1874, ROBERT HASH, b. 1876, ALMIRA HASH, b. 1879).

Baker & Whitaker neighbors:
The 1830 and 1840 Laurel Co., KY censuses show that the households of Andrew Baker, Giles Whitaker, and John Whitaker were adjacent to each other. John Whitaker's 1850 household is recorded in both the Laurel & Pulaski censuses.

2ggm Malinda Tompkins Adams's father-in-law James Adams married Hannah Baker, the widow of Andrew Baker on the 26 Jul. 1851, in Laurel Co., KY.

Andrew Baker was the father of Martha Baker Warren by his first unknown wife.

Martha Baker married Matthew Warren on Jan. 20th 1816 in Pulaski Co., KY. Andrew Baker was recorded as father of the bride.

In the 1850 Pulaski census you'll find that Rev. Matthew Warren's widow Martha Warren in household # 493 was the neighbor of John (wife Mary (Baker) Whitaker were in household #497, Charles (wife Mary Shiplet) Warren in household #494 (s/o Matthew & Martha) , Giles (wife Paulina Evans) Whitaker in household 495 (s/o Mills Whitaker), Andy (wife Cynthia Storm) Arnold in household #498, Tilman (wife Martha Cooper) Duncan in whose household #500, James Cooper and Sarah Arthur, (not yet married) are living and Andrew (wife Nancy Price) Warren in household # 502. Step-2ggf Cyrus Adams' Uncle Moses Adams (household 496) lived adjacent G-grandfather Henry Mills Whitaker's uncle Giles Whitaker (household # 495) and curiously my paternal G-aunt by marriage Winnie Eva Parrett Bryant's (wife of G-uncle Arthur Bryant) G-grandparents William & Amanda Bullock lived in household #491. This William Bullock (s/o Reuben was the G-nephew of my 4ggm Elizabeth Bullock Poynter (wife of 4ggf William Poynter). 4ggps William & Elizabeth Bullock Poynter's daughter 3ggm Nancy Jane Poynter married 3ggf Allen Chaney. Nancy Jane Poynter Chaney was kinswoman of Margaret Poynter Whitaker (wife of John Riley Whitaker) who were the grandparents of "G-aunt" Ada Whitaker married "G-uncle" John Walter Whitaker. John Riley Whitaker & James Harvey Whitaker were brothers and sons of William & Prudence Whitaker. "G-uncle" Andrew "Andy" Arnold (household#498) was the s/o James & Elizabeth Baker Arnold. Elizabeth Baker Arnold is a suspected daughter of Andrew Baker & first unknown wife ... Sister to Martha Baker Warren.... James & Eliabeth Baker Arnold were also the parents of Sidney Arnold m. Mills Whitaker & Mary Arnold m. James Whitaker. "G-uncle Andy" Arnold married "G-aunt" Cynthia Storm sister of Delilah Storm Trosper; Delilah, Cynthia & Andrew were children of 4ggps Rev. James & Sarah McHargue Storm.

There isn't any doubt that James Harvey Whitaker was a kinsman of the brothers John & Mills Whitaker (sons of Giles & Margaret Mills? Whitaker) but at this time (7 Aug. 2002) no one knows what their relationship was.

Giles Whiteaker, Alfred Warren & Charles Warren & Tilman Duncan, of above 1850 Census, witnessed the 1849 will of James Harvey Whiteaker.

James Cooper & Sarah Arthur married, 29 Sept. 1863. Wit. Jesse Morgan (?) Shiplett; Minister, G. B. Smith, Ambrose & Esther Arthur parents of the bride. James Cooper's step-father was Tilman Duncan witness of James Harvey Whitaker's 1849 will.

Morgan Links

Jesse Morgan's brother 3ggf Daniel Morgan, Jr. married 3ggm Malinda Whitaker the d/o 4ggps John & Mary Baker Whitaker. Daniel & Malinda Whitaker Morgan, Jr.'s daughter Lucinda "Cindy" Morgan married Amos Chaney. John Hash's first wife Elizabeth Morgan Hash was probably the daugther of Daniel Morgan, Sr. 1870 Laurel Co. census: Daniel Morgan, Sr. in household # 8 & Robert Wombles m. Sarah E. Morgan d/o Malinda Tompkins is in Reuben Hawk's household # 10 ... Robert & Sarah Morgan Wombles #62 are neighbors of Amos & Lucinda Morgan Chaney #70 in 1900 Pulaski.
"G-aunt" Sarah E. Morgan Wombles's aunt Nancy Tompkins Morgan married "G-uncle" Joseph Morgan who was Lucinda Morgan Chaney's uncle, on the 24th of Jan. 1846 in Laurel Co.

2ggm Lucinda Morgan Chaney was the maternal grandmother of sisters (my grandmother) Sallie Vanhook Whitaker (wife of grandfather James H. Whitaker) & (my G-aunt) Minnie Vanhook Whitaker (wife of my G-uncle Wils Whitaker). 2ggm Malinda Tompkins Adams Hash was the maternal grandmother of brothers James & Wils Whitaker.

Tilman Duncan's (wit. of James Harvey Whiteaker's 1849 will) widow Martha Duncan (m/1 Wm. Cooper), Martha's son James Cooper & his wife Sarah nee Arthur are buried in the Cooper Cemetery.

Cooper Cemetery On Line Creek In Pulaski Co.

Location: Start at the intersaction of Route #1269 and Route #1956 (near the Laurel County line - on some maps #1956 is called old #80), go westward on #1956 1.1 miles, turn right, go .8 mile following the Line Creek. At the place the Buffalo Branch Road "T" intersects with Line Creek Road, you will see the cemetery on the hillside on the left. The maintained cemetery is about 300' from the Line Creek Road. This is the old "Ceif" (John Finley) Cooper home place. The large 2-story home is still satnding. This once fine home is in bad condittion. The cemetery is in Pulaski County just across Line Creek from Rockcastle Co.

Elizabeth Thompkins' Will
I Elizabeth Thompkins of Laurel County being of feeble health and
advanced in years and being of sound mind and disposing memory and
desiring to make such disposition of my estate as seems to me justice do
make and constitute this my last will and testament.

1. It is my will and desire that my daughter Nancy Morgan have one
bee hive.

2. This my desire that my daughter Malinda Adams have one bee
hive.

3. This my desire that my daughter Mary Thompkins have one bee
hive.

4. This my desire that my grandson W. S. Turner have my red heifer
calf and bedbed clothing, bed
stead.

5. It is my desire that my daughter Burnetta Turner have one bee
hive and all the rest of my estate consisting of household and kitchen
furniture and one brown milk cow 2 years old heifer, two head of sheep,
and five head of hogs.

Witness my mark and signature this 25 of Aug, 1873.
Witness: W. E. Smith Elizabeth Thompkins mark

Nancy Tompkins above married Joseph Morgan s/o Daniel & Rebecca Barnes Morgan II. Daniel & Rebecca Barnes Morgan's son Daniel Morgan III married Malinda Whitaker d/o John & Mary Baker Whitaker.

A few years back, being unfamiliar with the location of where Matthew & Martha Baker Warren & their family lived (Line Creek), and after thoroughly combing the Laurel Co. Warrens, I'd strongly suspected that Wellington Warren of Laurel Co., KY was the best Warren candidate for being the father of G-grandmother "Clem." I had found him in the 1870 Laurel Co. census as being a widower and his profile fit that of widower John Hash who would later marry 2ggm Malinda. I had ignorantly dismissed the Pulaski Warrens because they seemed too far distant.... The information enclosed here proves how very wrong I was!!!

Another very important piece of circumstantial evidence strongly in favor of these Warrens being G-grandmother's is that 2ggm Malinda's daughter Mary was by a Baker man, who was no doubt the half brother of Martha Baker Warren, son Andrew & Hannah Roberts? Baker.

Cousin Carol Wyatt told me she'd found on record at the courthouse in London that 2ggm Malinda Tompkins Adams had filed a complaint against a man for lack of support for one of her children but Carol couldn't recall the man's name.

1870 Laurel Co. census: Daniel Morgan, Sr. in household # 8 & Robert Wombles m. Sarah E. Morgan d/o Malinda Tompkins is in Reuben Hawk's household # 10 ... Robert & Sarah Morgan Wombles #62 are neighbors of Amos & Lucinda Morgan Chaney #70 in 1900 Pulaski.

Other strong notable links are Andrew & Hannah Roberts? Baker's two sons who married 4ggps James & Eleanor "Nellie" Mahan Trosper's two daughters (sisters of 3ggf James Trosper married 3ggm Delia Storm): Smith Baker married Nancy Trosper & Boling Baker marrried Catherine Trosper. Nancy Trosper Baker & Catherine Trosper Baker were G-aunts of G-grandfather Henry Mills Whiteaker and given the Baker link and stretching it somewhat because brothers Smith & Boling Baker were step brothers of Cyrus Adams they would've been step uncles of G-grandmother Clementine Warren Whitaker.... Martha Baker Warren her step aunt as well as her grandmother. No doubt this is a very close Warren link.

3ggm Delia Storm Trosper Whitaker m/2 William Whitaker s/o 4ggps John & Mary Baker Whitaker. "G-uncle" William Whitaker's sister 3ggm Malinda Whitaker married 3ggf Daniel Morgan (parents of Lucinda Morgan Chaney who was the maternal grandmother of sisters Sallie Vanhook Whitaker & Minnie Vanhook Whitaker).

Other John & Mary Baker Whitaker Links

Son Solomon Whitaker (m. Thursey McFarland) and they were the parents of Mary Frances "Mollie" Whitaker married John Hash, Jr.
Solomon Whitaker was in the Civil War (24th Kentucky Regiment) with his brother Mills Whitaker & brother-in-law Daniel Morgan and James A. Trosper (nephew by marriage) who had married his 1st cousin Paulina Whitaker Farmer d/o Mills & Sidney Arnold Whitaker.

Mary Frances "Mollie" Whitaker Hash (wife of John Tilford Hash, s/o John & Malinda Tompkins Adams Hash) was the mother of George Washington Whitaker (by George Washington Vanhook) & Zella Hash Speaks.
George Washington Whitaker maried Mary "Maude" Chaney Vanhook d/o Amos & Lucinda "Cindy" Morgan Chaney. Lucinda Morgan Chaney was the d/o Daniel & Malinda Whitaker Morgan.

Wilburn Turner was born 1845, and died January 5, 1916. He married Burnetta W. Tompkins March 14, 1866 in Laurel County, Kentucky, daughter of Eli Tompkins and Elizabeth "Betty" Wilburn . She was born February 14, 1841, and died December 7, 1922.

Shadrack Turner, (brother of Wilburn Turner married Bernetta Tompkins), was born September 10, 1848, and died July 13, 1928 in Laurel County, Kentucky. He married Talitha Baker July 12, 1869 in Laurel County, Kentucky, daughter of Bolin Baker and Catherine Trosper. She was born April 5, 1847, and died April 5, 1928.

Burnetta Tompkins Turner, was Clementine Warren Whitaker's aunt.

Burnetta Tompkins' sister-in-law Catherine Trosper Baker, d/o James & Eleanor Mahan Tropser, was Henry Mills Whitaker's G-aunt.

Wilburn & Burnetta W. Tompkins Turner are buried at Acorn Cemetery, Pulaski Co., KY.
Burnetta was a school teacher.

Bernetta Tompkins & Wilburn Turner's son John D. Turner (b. 21 Dec.1880) married Viola Chaney, (b. 13 Apr. 1886) d/o Amos & Lucinda Morgan Chaney.

Viola Chaney Turner was the aunt of Sallie Vanhook married James Whitaker & Minnie Vanhook married Wils Whitaker.
Brothers James & Wils Whitaker were the sons of Henry Mills & Clementine Warren Whitaker.

Any inforamtion regarding the people above would be "greatfully" appreciated. Thanks. Best regards, Jim

jwdw note 5/11/09: 1. *Mary Frances Whitaker ("Molly") was the mother of "Pa" George ("Wash") Washington Whitaker (Vanhook)... 2. G-grandmother Mary "Maude" Chaney Vanhook Whitaker's mother Lucinda Morgan Chaney (wife of Amos) was the daughter of (Daniel Morgan) & Malinda Whitaker....Malinda Whitaker Morgan was the daughter of John W. & Mary Baker Whitaker. This Malinda Whitaker Morgan was the sister of Solomon Whitaker. Solomon Whitaker was the father of Mary Frances "Molly" Whitaker Hash (wife of John Tilford Hash) the mother of "Pa" George Washington Whitaker (by George Washington Vanhook) & Zella Hash Speaks.... I could use this as a 7th piece of circumstantial evidence for G-grandmother Clementine (Adams) Warren Whitaker being the granddaughter of Rev. Matthew & Mary Baker Warren..... G-grandmother Clementine (Adams) Warren Whitaker's half brother John Tilford Hash (husband of Mary Francis "Molly Whitaker Hash) was also a child of Malinda Tompkins Adam Hash who had known (a masked Warren man of the ages) Unknown (or Joel?) Giles Whiteaker, Alfred Warren & Charles Warren & Tilman Duncan, of above 1850 Census, witnessed the 1849 will of James Harvey Whiteaker.... Wellington Warren was the "very" first Warren I researched and I let him go of after finding that our Malinda Hash had lived in around Andrew Baker's family... Andrew's daughter Martha Baker married Rev. Matthew Warren.... Cryus Adams, was the son of James Adams m/2 Andrew Baker's widow Hannah nee? Baker this makes Hannah the step-mother of Cyrus Adams (step-mother-in-law to 2ggm Malinda) and Martha Baker Warren the step-sister-law of Cyrus & 2ggm Malinda.... LOL... Good morning you dare say, I think not. Oh, God here we go again... I liked Wellington because he'd married a paternal kinswoman Emiliza Cromer(d/o David & Rachel Sellers Cromer) of my Rockcastle G-grandmother elizabeth “Lizzie” Cromer Drew... I think Wellington's wife died before G-grandmother Clementine's birth March 10,1868-Nov. 28, 1941.... I have Rev. Matthew & Martha Baker Warren's son Joel? Warren as possible father of my Clementine

Sherlene, Looks accurate to me.... All i have as proof for my G-grandmother Clementine (Adams) Warren Whitaker (b. 9 Mar. 1868, d. 28 Nov. 1941; born out of wedlock) pedigree is 7 pieces of good circumstantial evidence. I've heard or read that you only need 3 pieces of good circumstatial evidence to make information as credible as a document.
1.       Her mother Malinda Tompkins Adams Hash lived close to Line Creek, Laurel & Pulaski Cos., KY in the vicinity of the Andrew Bakers & Warrens. 2. Her 1st father-in-law James Adams married Andrew Baker's widow. Rev. Matthew Warren s/o Charles & Catherine Floyd Warren married Martha Baker d/o Andrew Baker. 3. It's believed that she also had a couple of children out-of-wedlock by Baker/s men (Baker's man make me a cake as fast as you can ;-) sorry couldn't resist that.....). 4. Her niece Zella Hash Speaks word of mouth to me "Aunt Clem's father was a Warren). 5. G-uncle John Whitaker's (s/o G-grandmother Clem) death certificate gives mother's name as Clementine Warren 6. A letter I have from, my double by blood, G-aunt Minnie Vanhook Whitaker (sister of my Grandmother Sallie Vanhook married my G-uncle Wills Whitaker brother of my grandpa Jim "Trigg" Whitaker) says "Clem's father was a Warren. Jeff Renner told me that, Joel Warren, the only s/o (a preacher man) Rev. Matthew & Martha Baker that has no marriage record could possibly be the man I was looking for. This Joel Warren disappears from records abt. 1870.... G-grandmother Clem was born 1868.... Slight to BIG problem is that there was a widower, Wellington Warren, b. 1828 of Laurel Co., KY and he could've lost his wife Emiliza Cromer Warren before June 1867 (9 mos. til 9 Mar 1868). It would seem that I'd know more about Emiliza Cromer because on my father's side his grandmother was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cromer Drew of Rockcastle Co., KY. I've been told that Wellington Warren lived close to London the county seat of Laurel Co., KY, but I believe there were Cromers near Line Creek where the borders of Laurel, Rockcastle & Pulaski Cos. meet. Interesting that Great-grandparents Henry & Clementine Warren Whitaker would end up owning the land 1st owned by G-grandmother's fgrandfather & father.... stayed in my Whitaker family until the 1970's? 7. jwdw note 5/11/09: 1. *Mary Frances Whitaker ("Molly") was (half) sister of "Pa" George ("Wash") Washington Whitaker (Vanhook)... 2. G-grandmother Mary "Maude" Chaney Vanhook Whitaker's mother Lucinda Morgan Chaney (wife of Amos) was the daughter of (Daniel Morgan) & Malinda Whitaker....Malinda Whitaker Morgan was the daughter of John W. & Mary Baker Whitaker. Please note in last follow-up-message I said that Mary Francis "Molly" Whitaker was Step-G-Grandfather "Pa" George Washington Whitaker's (Vanhook) (half) sister.... She was his mother.

8th piece of circumstantial evidence putting GG-grandmother Malinda Tompkins in the close vicinity of Rev. Matthew & Martha Baker Warrren on Line Creek, Pulaski Co., KY: She knew 1. Daniel Morgan, Sr. 1848/49,father of Sarah; married 1 Cyrus Adams; knew 2.Unknown Baker probably s/o Andrew Baker & Unknown or Hannah?; knew 3. Unknown Warren (Joel?) s/o Rev. Matthew & Martha Baker Warren; & married 2.John Hash.

1900 Pulaski Co., KY Census
just ran across young Mahan? & Rosa Whitaker (household # 67) neighbors of Solomon & Thursey McFarland Whitaker (household 66)......

just thought of another (8th) piece of circumstantial evidence for our Malinda Tompkins Adams Hash living within the close vicinity of our Whitakers, Warrens, Chaneys & (espicially) Morgans... Aunt Sarah Morgan Wombles is a neighbor (Household # 62) .... "G-aunt Sarah Morgan Wombles was actually a half sister of my 2GG-grandmother Lucinda Morgan Chaney wife of 2GG-Amos Chaney....

My "G-uncle" Joseph Morgan, s/o of my 4th G-grandfather Daniel Morgan, Sr, m. our "G-aunt" Nancy Tompkins d/o our "G-grandfather Eli Tompkins". It's said that our "G-aunt" Sarah Morgan Wombles was raised by her uncle & aunt Joseph & Nancy Tompkins Morgan... 4th G-grandfather Daniel Morgan, Sr. mentions both "G-aunt" Sarah & 2GG Malinda Tompkins Adams Hash.

(I'm not going to say "my" old cousin/classmate/friend of Shopville, Elementary,& Jr. H. S., Doyle Ray Speaks, of 5th, 6th, & 8th grade (1959).... Lets just say a number of ladder steps away.... about 40 years before Genealogy would bring two buddies back together .... It's been more than 10years since cousin, Hazel Whitaker Holt, told me she'd seen some Genealogy research work done by (cousin) Doyle Speaks.Back in the day Doyle & I never talked genealogy as it hardly sunk in what it meant that my G-grandmother Mary "Maude" Chaney Vanhook (born 1880) Whitaker had robbed the craddle by marrying his uncle "George Wash" Washington Whitaker, (born 1893)....
Thinking about it last night I realized Doyle & I had way more in common family-wise than I'd ever totally realized:
1. I'm looking in the 1900 Pulaski Co., KY Census at Household # 70 which held the family of my 2GGps Amos & Lucinda "Cindy" Morgan Chaney (when it came to my mind that Doyle had been born there, 13 July 1945) and that his maternal grandparents (John) Tilford & Mary Francis "Molly" Whitaker Hash lived adjacent to them in Household # 69.... Suddenly, the vicinity of that area of Pulaski Co., KY all became alive for me .... I'd been there (abt. 7yrs. old) and seen the house (1951) and area..... My G-grandmother Mary "Maude" Chaney Vanhook, b. Feb. 1, 1880 had her own household with her 1st husband my G-grandfather Wm. "Marion" Vanhook, (b. 16 Apr. 1875-died 108 Apr. 1907).
