tennessee Pulliam and her husbands forebears- Charlton

Having interviewed Onnie Charlton last night by telephone, I am more sure than ever that this Charlton family has its roots in France. Onnie was born in Greene Co. Tennessee in the 1920's, a son of Joseph Charlton and grandson of Leman Charlton and great grandson of John R. Charlton and great great grandson of Simpson Charlton (b. 1801 Tenn). Onnie said that as a boy it was discussed in the family that their name was originally French and that their forebears had come from France to the Colonies. The names in the family seem to indicate this- Pointin, Harue, Mares, Curin- and the old testament names Jacob, Abraham, Moses seem to indicate Quaker or Jewish religion. Maybe they were Hugenot.

brothers are (I think)-

1.Ruebin Charleton -Wash. Co. Wills 1821(Could this be William R.?)
William C. Charleton, Thomas Charleton (married Jenny Glass 1805), and Simpson b. abt 1785 (married Eliz. Wilson 1805) could be the sons of Ruebin (William R?)

2.Pointin Charleton b. bef 1766
Pointen Charleton -1821 will Washington Co. Tenn
wife Rebeccah
a. John abt 1789
b. Mary Ann "Polly" abt 1790
c. Pointen Jr. abt 1792
d. Thomas abt 1794
e. Margaret abt 1796 not in writing of will-could be Ruebin's daughter
f. Simpson b. 1801 Tenn.

Simpson Charlton b. 1801 had a 1st born son in 1833 called John R. (probably Ruebin) Charlton in a second marriage to a Susan Page. In this marriage he also had Moses 1837, Cata 1839, Martha 1840, Eleanor 1846, and Andrew 1849. These children are from the 1850 census. There may be more later.

William R. Charlton of Clark County IN had a son also named Simpson b in 1862. William R. Charlton could be from Simpson's first marriage to Sarah Collins 11 Dec. 1821 or he could be Simpson 1801's cousin, son of Ruebin.

"Moses Charlton served as a private in G Co., 8th Tenn. Infantry. Enlisted on March 15, 1863, discharged on August 11, 1865. Was 26 years old, so that would put his birth date about 1837. He enlisted from Greene Co. Tenn. He married MARTHA WHITE,8 October 20, 1867 in Greenville, Tenn. She was born 1842 and died 1922,(this info from the pension records and marriage record that I have). His children are; TULL CHARLTON, JACK CHARLTON, JENNY CHARLTON, HARUE CHARLTON, ALEXANDER DUFF CHARLTON b. August 29, 1878. Tull Charlton is my great father. Moses ended up with I beleive about 500 acres of land in the Chiminey Top Mountain area of Tenn, which the family still owns most. (Otts Charlton (my grand father's brother)still lives in the old house). Moses also worked as mail Carrier and Post Master of Jeroldstown in Chuckey, Tenn., sometime after the war, so we're told. The connection that I found that may put him as Simpson's child came from another enrty on the World Tree Project."
