Robert... It seems there were so many with the surname Smith, they may have just decided that some people should have a given name Smith. My dad born 1884 was just called SMITH as if it was his given name, and seldom called him by his given name which as Louis M. Then for some it was a name some just gave the Blacksmith, gunsmith, tinsmith, or one of the many other smiths... They just called them the Smith. Other than that I too am still confused, but learned to live with it.... Bill Smith
