Chris...... No, that is not a sort of dumb question or statement. It was a fact that even ,y grandmother called my Dad Smith, when she clerly knew his given name was Louis. I know also about that namimg of more than one child in a family with the same name, and I did wonder why, unless the man had another wife who wanted a child named for one in her family. But, I have found that in most cases, when a name such as Smith, is used as given , then there was a Smith earlier in that family... Other than that.... I think that as a smith, it is so common that they would want to get away from that.. Bill Smith
