As mentioned in another post on this forum, I am not a pergerson descendant but have just researched a friend's Pergerson line back from Franklin Co NC.
I have just finished reading the posts on this forum and I think an unintentional error in research is a block for many of you. Without much more research to prove it, I would be very cautious about accepting the position that the Pergerson surname came from a a corruption of the Pinkerson surname. I have seen two very distinct record trails in the little research I've done, (census records on Ancestry)
There are Pinkersons in Warren Co NC on the 1810 and 1850 census. In 1830 they are Pergasons. The given names are old testament prophets. It seems likely they are connect to the Pinkerson in Charlotte Co Va mentioned in a message on this forum. The family in Rockingham may indeed connect to this family, I do not know.
Most of you however shold descend from the Rev War soldier Joel Pergason from whom the Georgia branch descends. He is listed on the 1790 NC census. I don't have the papers with me since I have given them to my friend, but I believe it is Granville Co , Hillsborough Dist. In 1800 Joel Pergason is listed in Wake Co NC, he is over 45. Listed next to him is John Pergason, 26-44. Between them there are 3 sons 0-16. From the Georgia Pergasons message below it semms that Joel Sr is in Ga by 1820.
There is another Joel Perguson. He is listed in Halifax Co va on the 1830 census. He is on page 424, 5th name down from the beginning of the P listing. There may be other Pergusons, I did not go through all the P listings.
This Joel has 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 40-50. Age 50-60 this Joel would have been born 1770-1780. Best guess is this is Joel Jr of the Ga Rev War Soldier.
As you can clearly see, there is no reason to suppose there is any connection to the Pinkerson family.
