Dear Purkey Family members:
This summer, while in Europe, we travelled east from Cologne to the the small very beautiful German Westerwald villages of HEMMELZEN, BIRNBACH, and BIRKENBEUL. I trace my roots back to PURKEY (after 1850), PERKEY/PERKY (1840-1850), PURKY (1830), PURKIPILE (1810), and BIRKENBILE/ BIRCKENBEUEL before 1800.
In the Westerwald I met with local church officials. I photographed the old Birnbach Church, which has been in use since 1131 with slight modifications made in the 16th century. It is the Church where Johannes Arnold Birkenbeil baptized his children. The local archivists were extremely helpful, and so was Manfried Schumacher who now lives in our historic Birkenbeul family's home. Records exist of our Birkenbeul family living there since 1687.When I first met Manfried he told me,"Christian Birkenbeuel was born in that bedroom up there."
I also spent a month in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland inquiring about the possiblity of our family coming from there.
If anyone is interested in this history I am happy to send the documented information I found. You can reach me at : firstname.lastname@example.org
Looking forward to sharing. Bev
