In Reply to: MARY OR MABEL PURKEY OF LEWISBURG AREA, WV by Christina Douglas of 311

I have found more information about my gggrandmother. Her name is Mary, maiden/surname still unknown, b. ABT 1876. She was about 19 when she married (ABT 1895). She married a Purkey (first name unknown) and the 1910 census indicates she lived in Randolph Co. She is listed as Head. No mention of her husband. I guess she was either widowed or divorced.

Her children include: David, b. ABT 1893; John, b. ABT 1894; Lillie, b. ABT 1897; Frank, b. ABT 1900; Ethel, b. ABT 1904; Mabel, b. ABT 1907; Charles, b. ABT 1910. The census also indicates that Mary had another child who was no longer living in 1910.

It is thought that Mary is Seneca Indian.

Mary later remarried and relocated. She became Mary Hedrick and was living on a farm called Frog Hollow near Lewisburg in Greenbrier Co.

Mary's daughter Mabel, my ggrandmother, married Ernest W. Cruise. I have recently requested a birth certificate from West Virginia Vital Stats, hoping that it would list her parents (specifically Mary's maiden name). I am not sure how successful my request will be.

My grandfather Ernest P. Cruise was born at Frog Hollow to Mabel. Other Cruise children included: Greta (b. 1927) and James (b. 1929). My grandfather, Ernest P., later changed his name to John P. Cruze, Sr.
