have finally received a "delayed" certificate of birth from west virginia vital stats. Evidently Mabel, my ggrandmother, applied for this in 1968. It lists Mabel's birthdate as 1/24/1907 and also lists her parents as Thomas Jefferson Purkey and Mary Cathryn Smith. My research indicates Thomas J. Purkey died in 1903.

Would the odds be that Mabel is wrong about her birthdate? Or woudl the odds be that the all the information i have found on Thomas Jefferson Purkey list his death incorrectly?

As supporting evidence in requesting this birth certificate Mabel provided an affidavit from her brother, David Clinton. He was born ABT. 1893 and would/should know if Mabel was born by his father!? Of course Mabel has been dead for a few years now, so I can't rightly ask her.

Would anyone know what the next step would be? Should i just overlook the difference? I can't help but feel like i don't really belong to this Purkey family tree that i just discovered.

Could i consider the information is wrong? How could i disprove it? Should i try to locate a death certificate for Thomas J. Purkey? How would I do that? Would anyone belonging to this family tree have real evidence of the year of his death as opposed to reports from other online family trees?

Sorry if this rambling message expresses too much frustration and doesn't really provide a real question or message about the family tree searches that are going on here.
