I'm not sure if they're the same John, as I'm just now piecing together my family tree from old census documents and such. However, my great, great, great grandfather's name was John Purkey, son of Reuben Purkey, and was born in 1825. My father's side hails from the Hancock County, Tennessee area, so there must be a connection somewhere. My grandfather's name was Wiley (sometimes shown as Wyley, 1907-1987). He married Maud Winkler. I hope this helps! If you're interested, I'll send you a pdf of my family tree as it fills out... I'd also be very interested in looking at your work, to see if I can fill in any missing branches!
