Purkiss family tree

I am compiling my family tree and my maiden name was Purkiss.
My Great Great Grandfather John Purkiss (purkis) arrived in Launceston Tasmania Australia aboard the ship Whirlwind arriving in 1855 from London. John was described as an assisted immigrant he was 33 occupation shoemaker, native of essex of independant religion and able to read and write.

He married Sarah Powell. Her mother was Mary Powell widow .native of suffolk maiden name Hawes. The Powell family were also on board the Whirlwind
described as domestic servants.(religion Wesleyans) and natives of Suffolk.

One of the children born to John and Sarah (James) had a middle name of Stammers a name that has popped up a lot in Essex. I have found a William Purkis who was a Boot and shoe maker in Southminster in 1848 and wonder if they are related. Can anyone help me
Regards Sandy
