I am looking for information related to a William Purnell/Parnell whose estate was administered in Abbeville District, South Carolina in 1819 (see below). This William died in the War of 1812 or in one of the Indian Wars, and his widow applied for his pension. There were three orphans: Matthew Robert Purnell, Martha Ann "Patsey" Purnell, and Samuel Morris Purnell (my ancestor). The orphaned children moved with William Barksdale (see record below) to Lawrence County, Alabama and then to Marion County, Alabama.

PARNELL, WILLIAM - Box 109, Pack 3080:
Est. admnr. Nov. 12, 1819 by Wm. Barksdale, Matthew Robinson, John Burnett unto Moses Taggart Ord. Abbeville Dist. sum $2,000.00. Cit. pub. at Little Mountain Church.

Lawrence County, Alabama
Deed Book for 1823
Pages 191-192

Know all men by these presents that I, WILLIAM BARKSDALE, Administrator of the estate of WILLIAM PURNELL, deceased, who died in the service of the United States, have constituted and appointed, and by these presents I do consitute and appoint WILLIAM ROBERSON of the County of Lawrence and State of Alabama, of which county I am also an inhabitant, my true and lawful Attorney for me and in my name, to apply for and recover for me the sum of forty-eight dollars which is due to me as administrator of aforesaid from the United States as part of the sum to be paid to me by said United States on account of said Purnell, deceased. I have elected to receive of the United States forty-eight dollars per annum for five years instead of one hundred and sixty acres of land which was the bounty of said Purnell, deceased. [T]he said sum of forty-eight dollars is to be received by my said attorney of any officer of the United States, or the persons having authority to pay the same in Abbeville, South Carolina, or elsewhere, and I do also authorize my said attorney to ____ of any officer or other person authorized by the same, the sume of forty-five dollars to me owing by the said United States as administrator of said deceased, being the amount the widow of said deceased is entitled to an account of widowhood by reason of the death of said Purnell for the term of nine months, and I do authorize my said attorney or any person he may appoint to receive of the said United States, the three other payments of forty-eight dollars annually due to me as administrator of said Pernell from said United States, and I do hereby notify and inform all, that my said attorney may do in the (same?). Given under my hand and seal the 13th day of October, 1823.

William (his mark) Barksdale
