Purse, Purswell, 1700's

I'm researching the Purswell family. A recurring theme is that the name originated because of a tradition in the 1700's to combine the bride and grooms last names. The story goes that a man with the surname Purse married a woman named Wells and they combined their names into Purswell. The earliest Purswell I can account for is Henry Purswell born about 1782 in PA. He died in Barbour county AL. Others in my family have been researching Purswells for some time and no one can find records of them prior to Henry. This leads us to believe that there may be some truth to the idea of the combined surnames. Anyone have anything on a Purse marrying a Wells prior to 1782?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please email to
