Joseph J. Purtell of Little Meadows, Pa. Joseph J. Purtell, 80, of Little Meadows, died at his residence after an extended illness Thursday, September 16, 2004. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary; two brothers, Charles and Francis; and a sister, Mary. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jean M. Purtell, Little Meadows; one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Cheryl Purtell, Little Meadows; three grandchildren, Wendy Purtell, Melissa Koop, and Michael Purtell; two great-grandchildren, Grayson, and Ian Koop; and a great-grandson to be born in December; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Edwin Colwell, Apalachin, Madeline and Eugene Barno, Apalachin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Noreen Purtell, Little Meadows, Robert and Ethel Purtell, Little Meadows; many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Joe. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Little Meadows. He was one of the founding members of Little Meadows Fire Department and also served on the Little Meadows Rescue Squad. He was a successful builder in the Triple Cities for 50 years, a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was an avid sports fan, and in his early years played Double A baseball. Funeral services will be held Monday, 9 a.m., from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, and at 10 a.m. from St. Thomas the Apostle Church, where a Funeral Mass will be offered. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Little Meadows, Pa. The family will receive friends at the memorial home Sunday 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in Joe's memory may be made to the Little Meadows Rescue Squad, Little Meadows, Pa. 18830.
