Hi Purtle researchers. Can you help me? I descend from George "Mike" Purtell, b. 10/14/1860 AR d. 8/2/1942 Hope, AR married Sallie B. Ross, b. 3/13/1861 Oak Grove, AR d. 11/30/1933 AR. They had the following children: Annis Purtell b. 9/16/1881 AR; Lossia Purtell b. 3/24/1886 AR; Tennie Purtell b. 6/4/1884 AR; Lola Purtell b. 2/24/1888 AR; Zeddie Purtell b. 4/12/1890 AR; Scottie Lou Purtell b. 6/1/1892 d. 6/2/1988 LA married John Morgan May (my line); Bessie Purtell b. 4/25/1897 AR; Jesse Purtell b. 3/9/1898 AR; George Leslie Purtell b. 11/20/1899 AR; and Lois R. Purtell b. 3/19/1902. Most of the children were born in the community of Oak Grove which is where the family lived most of their lives. I have census records and pictures of headstones which show the spelling as "Purtell". Story goes George "Mike" was an only child to a Mike Purtell and Mary ??? and father Mike was killed in the Civil War. Mary then gave George "Mike" to the Purtell's to raise and she married a "Capp" had one child, he died and then she married a "Scroggins" and had three additional children. George "Mike" was raised around Union Baptist Church. Supposedly, Mike Sr. and Mary were born in Tennessee. Most of these Purtell's are buried in Shover Springs Cemetary, Hope, Ark. If anyone can help with this Purtell mystery, I would greatly appreciate.
