The first Purtlebaugh was George born about 1752.I am a Bartlebaugh researchertrying to find out why some in this family used the Bartlebaugh spelling. What I noticed was all Purtlebaughs come from only this George. It was told to me that their name before was Bartlebaugh. So some took the name back.I have copies of official papers that show George the son of the first George signed his name Purtlebaugh at the top and Bartlebaugh at the bottom.
Also I see a George Puterbaugh born about the same time buthe lived in Pa. He had the name George Bartlebaugh in his history at times.
We are at this time trying to find the connection to these families.Ever notice how few carry the name compared to other names coming from Europe. There must have been a name change and it was here after they came to America. If you draw a circle where we find the name in Bedford Co area Pa. down to what is now W. Va., you will find all the Purtlebaughs, Bartlebaughs, Puterbaughs and Butterbaughs. Not till almost 1800 can you find this name in other places.
If you want a file that gives all these names and where they were born you can e-mail.Was Mary called Margaret also? She was born in Pa while the rest were born in Va from this Purtlebaugh line.
